2005 AML Dia de los Muertos Exchange

Call Details Participants

A mix of Aztec ritual and Catholic theology, Dia de los Muertos or the Day of the Dead is celebrated each year about the same time as Halloween. While it may seem counter intuitive to our American Wonder Bread sensibilities Dia de los Muertos is a celebration of the continuity of life and used as an opportunity to honor the dead. Dia de los Muertos is not a celebration of death itself

During Dia de los Muertos, animated skeletons or calacas appear everywhere and skulls are a recurrent symbol. Skulls that have been carved from sugar or other candy are personalized with the deceased's name and exchanged as gifts. Pan de muertos, a special holiday egg bread is baked, and homes are decorated with ofrenda or special altars that are dedicated to family and friends that have died.

The entries from last year's call were exhibited at Stampotique in Phoenix, AZ and received a good amount of attention, so it's possible this year's entries will be exhibited somewhere as well.
